bless me bloggers, for I have linked

It has been 16 days since my last link-session… Yup, I’m a recovering Catholic. Hi. And now, let us link.

USA: Cariprazine has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It’s an atypical antipsychotic and it’ll be pimped under the sexy name of Vraylar. Autocorrect suggested ‘vary largely’, which is a phrase I suspect we could apply to most, if not all of our meds and their effects. The efficacy is anyone’s guess, but here’s a headsup about the sighed effects.

Most common reactions reportedly caused by schizophrenic patients taking Vraylar were the triad of tremors, slurring of speech and involuntary muscle spasms collectively called extrapyramidal symptoms. For bipolar patients, common side effects were, aside from the extrapyramidal symptoms, indigestion, agitation and drowsiness. The combined number of participants for all trials was more than 2,700 volunteers. source

We take antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, tranquillisers, sleep meds… We never take anything with “bipolar disorder” on the box though, do we? The disorder varies too fucking largely.

Studies show medication adherence in bipolar disorder is only about 40% to 45%, but this dangerous, progressive disease has a high suicide rate. Adherence is complicated by the fact that patients may miss the mild “high” that many associate with periods of creativity, says Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD.  source

UK: What I’ve learned from my mother’s bipolar disorder is a truly lovely thing – and you should read it whether or not you’re a mother and/or daughter. Okay one of the things she learned is how to do a duckface, but that’s totally forgiven once the warmth and love shine through. Perfect for printing out and shoving in the face of anyone who ever gives you that whole “bipolar people shouldn’t have kids” bs – and for you too, when you’re agonising over it.

USA: A beautifully written piece about an unbeautiful subject next

Work hard, child. Internalize the figures of your mother, your father, your parents (one omnipotent double-gendered personage). Internalize The Race. Internalize both races. Then internalize the contradictions. Teach your psyche to adapt its solo life to a group obbligato. Or else let it abandon any impulse toward independence and hurtle toward a feverishly perfect presentation of your people. (Margo Jefferson) Growing Up Black and Female Meant Depression Was Forbidden

UK: A departure from the usual my little pony perspective from those whose bipolar is in remission (or whose bipolar was a mild version in the first place, perhaps), this dude gives a very honest account in a two part interview.

This brings us to the present day. I am still deeply mired in depression and suicidal ideation. As a result and after eight years I have lost my job. My wife and I have separated and I have had to move to cheaper accommodation. I am now swamped in benefits’ forms and continuing on the medication regime mentioned above, although I have requested a review with my psychiatrist as it clearly is not working. source

Perfect for printing and shoving in the faces of those who think that “bipolar is manageable” is the important part of all of those intro info articles. So isn’t it manageable? It is, there just needs to be a confluence of all or most of the following (I’m sure I’ve left out loads, please let me know).

Getting diagnosed, preferably earlier than the 10 year average.
Finding good treatment.
Being able to afford/access good treatment.
Finding the right meds.
Avoiding long and short term damage by the meds.
Not having a treatment resistant type of bipolar.
Having a safe place to live.
Having adequate money.
Having a good support network.
Avoiding being the target of jokes, cruelty and discrimination.

Nicer people than me might enjoy why I love being bipolar instead.

Uwpid-punch-159753_640.pngK: I’ve always thought that Frank Bruno seemed like a decent bloke, and I thought the documentary about his daughter, him and bipolar was good. Poor dude’s been sucker punched by it again and is in hospital.

Um. If an ex world champion boxer says bipolar is tough, could all the mugglefuckers who think that we can snort pollen and think positive to overcome bipolar please stand up so we can shoot you down again.

Scott Stapp has been having a rough time of it too (in a far more flamboyant way than Frank), but is now feeling good and asking for a Creed reunion.

Couple more shlebs bounded on to the bipolar bandwagon:

UK: DJ & former radio 1 host Benga has revealed he has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

I might as well explain it on here. My bipolar was brought on by drugs and the schizophrenia was the result of excessive touring. (from his Twitter feed)

USA: From Olympian To Vegas Escort: Suzy Favor Hamilton Opens Up About Her Struggle With Bipolar Disorder.

Favor Hamilton’s journey from Olympian to escort to mental health activist is singular. But her experience with bipolar disorder isn’t drastically different from that of the 6 million other American adults who live with the condition.

What the … how the hell does one like that get to practice???? I’m sorry but if something like this happens, in order for anybody to retain any faith in these types of doctors they should not only disqualify him but his supervisor and whoever qualified him in the first pace. What the fuck!? Ok I better go read the article before I rage the page down. And ever so sorry about the swearing, as usual.

    1. You’ll rage after you read the article too, it doesn’t improve and there are no mitigating circumstances at all. He’s just a thorough fuckwitted of a dangerous bastard. Google Dr Alex Sharah psychiatrist though, the top result I got was his practice location, wrong with “permanently shut down” in red.

      1. In all the links I had opened in new tabs, his was the one that got away.I honestly didn’t get the comparison of Lesbians and paedophiles is he out of his mind??? And “disqualified for at least two years”. At least two years??? This guy should be not only disqualified but tried for emotional and psychological abuse, that to be on his record and a cease and desist from ever working as anything close to people again. Seriously I don’t get why so much leniency. I wouldn’t necessarily have him jailed, just never to “help” human beings again :((

      2. Ah i just googled well yes, that permanently is good but I still maintain, why the hell was he allowed to practice at all? Don’t psychiatrist have to constantly refer back to someone else? It is sooooo scary to think what an undisciplined psychiatrist can do to a patient, i don’t even want to go there.

And thanks for the one about what she’s learnt from her mother’s bipolar… I do, very often, worry about how I may be fucking my kids up with my irritability (coz it can get fugly), so its good to know that there is hope they will still turn out ok xoxoxo

  3. I consulted the sacred pegacorn and it has granted you forgiveness for your lapse in linkage, but you must say ten hail scaries and atone by sending the pegacorn’s mistress cake vodka…

I felt my skin crawl reading about the doctor who treated the bipolar lesbian with holy water and prayer knowing she was muslim. Sounds as bad as half of my treatment has been. Though it’d have been entertaining to me if the doctor had resorted to voodoo.

The circadian rhythm thing seems like as good a place as any to start. I also wish they’d study the correlation between thryoid function/body temperature regulation, and bipolar. I keep telling them my seasonal isn’t based on lack of sunlight, it’s because my body interprets the cold as ten times more extreme than others. I can’t function when I am shivering and in that much discomfort, so depression seems an obvious conclusion. Maybe my thyroid tests have always been normal but I can’t help but think there’s something to that whole line of thought.

But then I’m just the lowly psych patient living with this destructive shit everyday, while the doctors have their education and books to tell that what it is really like.

    Pfft.

    1. I’m sending cake vodka by express dragon mail even as we speak. Your thyroid thing is interesting – and fuck ja, “they” don’t listen to us do they? Bastards. And that shrink…….. what a complete and utter anus (only much less useful and attractive). Bah.

          1. Yeah I lost interest once they quit putting toys in cereal boxes thus making brand names and generic all the same.
Damn it, I miss decoder rings and door hangers.

              1. WTF???? I’ve been buying her generic and brand name cereal for years now and they don’t have anything inside, is that some stupid state law here? I am OUTRAGED.

Not really,,, so,,, I’ve been mixing em in his regular Cheerios ~ Hahaha i’m such a sneak, (comes with experience)! Cheerios are pretty much one of the only things I buy brand (taste reasons)

I used to feed my hamster cheerios as they had same ingredients as pricy pet store snacks. I think they taste like cardboard. Woo hoo for bag lady dumpster diving. Can do wayyy better than hammy treats now.

    1. It’s all the progress the bastards ever make, isn’t it? I begin to wonder if most of the value of the drug is actually in the marketing.

      1. i think it is. that and the stranglehold they have on us before a generic is allowed. Pdoc prescribed a new sleeping pill for me the other week. $2.50 per pill was my cost after insurance. They are just starting to advertise it and i’ve already quit it.

  4. It would have been hilarious if Sharah’s patient’s eyes turned temporarily all-black and she steamed off the water instantaneously, screamed epithets in Arabic, and floated off the ground otherwise unaffected by being doused, or, more darkly, did something more dark. Who would have believed THAT? But then MY brain took me to all the suspected-demon-posession+catholic-priest=formula for a movie or an episode of Supernatural schlock. It’s entertaining, maybe even relatively good, but it’s schlock. Alas. Sigh. While I’m not convinced there are NOT demons, I’m fairly convinced we choose our behaviours and do all have habits, good or bad. And then there’s the issue of defining what’s good and what’s bad. Supernatural is pretty good schlock, but that’s only my opinion. I confess, I have a celebrity crush on Ruth Connell’s character in the show. And maybe on herself.

  6. I’d like to share this hilarious clip from “Silicon Valley” (TW: lotsa f-bombs)
about coming up with a Silicon Valley-company name.

The clip reminded me of how Big Pharma’s marketing might truly play out and would explain how they create med names like VRAYLAR!

    Enjoy!

      1. ;) !!!!! Awesome.

Now you’ve inspired me to come up with something…..dang, Fumblahr™ is a hard act to follow. Let me go talk to Lucy and she if she has any ideas. She just barked the following:

        Oxytocia™
        Synapslaphappyquel™
Californium™ (an element, Cf, its classification is Rare Earth & watch out lithium, this is the groovy, hot, new mood stabilizer!)
Sphincteromine™ (this new benzodiazepine will relax any muscle in your body 100 times faster and stronger than diazepam, especially in one’s nether regions)
Traumaloftelavilcumulonimbus™, a mood elevator also helpful for PTSD
Oblivionpionpinetinemine™- this antidepressant is even better than ketamine; to be injected into one’s ear canal

          1. High praise, many thanks, and I’ll let Lucy know that you gave her a beautifully fitting (if I may say so!) compliment, which also could be said for S. & P.

  7. Holy water?? Holy jumpin’ crap. I’m surprised that psychiatrist hasn’t been punched by a patient. No, not advocating it, but can well see it happening.

Lovely article about the lass with the mum with bipolar. Love this quote: “From my mother’s bipolar disorder, I’ve learned how to be more understanding, more compassionate.”

21 things link thing: Recognised every one – including the podge & the curly hair – except for “You don’t find suicidal thoughts scary.” Oh yes I did, & do.

As for your list of what makes bipolar manageable, this: “Avoiding being the target of jokes, cruelty and discrimination.” Does this even happen? Ever?!?

    1. That whole list, I think, would only apply to an incredibly rare subspecies of bipolar – so rare, that I’ve never actually seen one.

  8. Thank you for this. It reminds me that people still have no clue about Bipolar Disorder or most mental illnesses. Drugs and Alcohol can cause a person without a presenting mental illness to experience an onset of symptoms for the first time. They both can be used as self medication like I did for 20 years. They can also worsen an underlying condition. But it’s genetics, brain chemistry, hormones, biological traits and environmental factors like trauma, abuse, or a significant loss that are at the root cause of the illness. To say touring or drugs and alcohol caused your illness is sad. But you know all this. Making Bipolar manageable is something I read a long time ago and laughed. I believe someone with Bipolar Disorder wrote something similar. I remember thinking I was doing something wrong. When she asked followers to answer some questions, I did. Her response was “Well maybe it’s like that for you but not for most of us.” That’s when I decided to do my own blog.

    1. Ja, I thought that quote was rather dodgy too, I’m so glad you picked up on it. I mean, I get that trauma etc can activate it, but cause it? Nah, I’m with you on that one. As for manageable…. I wish.

  10. What if the most effective meds are really natural substances that are illegal? I’m afraid to try them, but it’s worth speculating. I’d like to see the results of an experiment testing my theory. I could see where certain ones might be effective.
